Transitory Dwellings / Vorübergehende Behausungen
Transitorische Existenzformen zeichnen unsere Zeit aus. Wanderarbeiter, Geflüchtete oder Küstenbewohner leben in Übergangssituationen. Sie richten sich in vorläufigen Behausungen ein, die dann oft permanent werden und das Behelfsmässige zum Dauerhaften machen. Die Ausstellung Transitory Dwellings zeigt Formen des Transitorischen in der zeitgenössischen Kunst und fragt nach der Verfasstheit unserer Zeit, die sich in den künstlerischen Arbeiten abzeichnet.

Der französische Fotograf Bruno Serralongue dokumentiert in Series Calais, Ongoing
das inzwischen berühmt gewordene Flüchtlingslager “The Jungle” in Calais. Mittels Momentaufnahmen zeichnet er die sich konstant verändernde, prekäre Umgebung zwischen 2008 und der kürzlich erfolgten Räumung als fragmentierte Chronik nach.

Karen Kramers filmische Arbeit The Eye That Articulates Belongs on Land (2016) ist eine anthropologische Studie von einer Küstenregion in Japan, Fukushima nicht unähnlich. Die Künstlerin erkundet die Verwüstung einer Landschaft am Übergang von Land und Wasser und fragt nach der Auswirkung auf die Bewohner. Lange Einstellungen zeigen menschliche Überbleibsel und die Rückkehr der Natur. Dieser unsichere posthumane Schwellenraum wird von Stimmen aus der Mythologie heimgesucht und erinnert an die möglicherweise vorübergehende Behausung der Menschen auf der Erde.

Enrique Ramirez Cruzar un Muro (Überqueren einer Mauer) ist vom 13. Artikel der Allgemeinen Erklärung der Menschenrechte inspiriert. Hier wird allen das Recht zugesprochen, “jedes Land, einschließlich seines eigenen, zu verlassen und in es zurückzukehren”. Im Wartezimmer eines Büros für Einwanderungsangelegenheiten, das sich irgendwo befindet, kommen alle Hoffnungen unserer Zeit zusammen: die Sehnsucht und das Recht zu träumen, zu reisen und Grenzen zu überschreiten. Das surreale Szenario von Ramirez’ Film ist ein metaphorisches Spiel mit heutigen Übergangszonen zwischen Fiktion und Realität.

Allen Sekula und Noël Burch folgen in ihrem Film The Forgotten Space den globalen Lieferketten von Cargosschiffen rund um die Welt. Die Erfindung des Containers und der Containerhäfen-Logistik hat erst die Voraussetzungen für den vollständig globalisierten Welthandel geschaffen. Sekula/Burch porträtieren ein Heer von Arbeitslosen und Wanderarbeitern bei ihren Versuchen, sich der ständigen Bewegung des Finanzkapitalismus anzupassen. Verlierer wie Sieger sind den kurzlebigen Produktionszyklen ausgeliefert, was ihre Existenz völlig der Finanzspekulation unterwirft.

Transitory forms of existence characterize our time. Migrant workers, refugees or coastal residents live in transitional zones and under transient conditions. They are housed in provisional dwellings, which often become permanent so that the makeshift is persistent. The exhibition Transitory Dwellings investigates forms of the transient and asks about the state of our time and the condition of existence that emerge through the artistic portraits.

In his Calais Series the French photographer Bruno Serralongue documents the now famous refugee camp „The Jungle“ in Calais. His shots taken between 2008 until the camp’s recent dissolution outline a fragmented chronicle of a constantly changing, precarious environment in the medium of photography.
Karen Kramer’s work The Eye That Articulates Belongs On Land is an anthropocentric study set in Japan using a haunting figure to explore a landscape of utter desolation.
The film focuses on a battle between nature and the man made, set in an un-named place exhibiting signs of deep trauma. The artist explores the devastation of a landscape at the passage between land and water and its impact on its inhabitants. Long shots focus on human remnants and the return of nature. This unsafe post-human threshold, haunted by voices from mythology, reminds us of the temporary existence of man.
Enrique Ramirez film Cruzar un Muro (Crossing a Wall) is inspired by the 13th Article of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights which affirm that  “Everyone has the right to leave any country, including his own, and to return to his country”. In a waiting room of an immigration-office, located somewhere, all hopes of our time come together: the longing and the right to dream, to travel and to cross borders. All this takes place in a surreal scenario between fiction and reality. The scenario of Ramirez’ film addresses transitional form of life between fiction and reality.
In their film The Forgotten Space Allen Sekula and Noel Burch follow the global supply chains of cargo ships around the world. The invention of the container has created the condition for today’s fully globalized world trade. Sekula / Burch portray an army of unemployed and migrant workers in their attempts to adapt to the constant movement of financial capitalism. Losers and winners are exposed to the short-lived production cycles subjecting their existences constantly to financial speculation.
