Gesa Klob | Sheer Tapestry

Mit „Sheer Tapestry“ entwickelt Gesa Kolb im Juni 2024 eine textile Installation im Rahmen ihrer KABUFF-Residency. Sie wird sich mit dem Arbeits- und Ausstellungsraum auseinandersetzen, ihn einrichten und umdeuten, im Blick auf dessen provisorische Beschaffenheit.

Dabei wird die Materialität des Raumes untersucht und umgarnt. Die Sheer Tapestry, zu deutsch „durchsichtiger Wandteppich“, wird als textile Rauminstallation die Struktur der Holzwände ornamentartig überlagern und reflektieren. Dabei geht es der Künstlerin um das Spiel aus Verhüllen und Hervorheben, um die Wahrnehmung auf den Raum zu lenken. Eine Art abstrakter Wandteppich, der die Wände nicht verdeckt, sondern sie vielmehr hervorhebt und sie Teil des Kunstwerks werden lässt.

Gesa Kolb hat Bildende Kunst an der Kunstakademie Karlsruhe studiert und war Meisterschülerin bei Prof. Erwin Gross. Ihre künstlerische Arbeit ist oft ein Zusammenspiel von Körper und Raum, werden aber auch aus der Betrachtung heraus entwickelt, Räume selbst als Körper zu verstehen, die bekleidet werden. Manche der Arbeiten befinden sich an den Wänden, andere bedecken Böden, wieder andere teilen die Räume neu auf oder verdecken sie. Sie erinnern zuweilen an architektonische Elemente wie Dächer oder Treppen, zeichnen sich aber nicht durch Stabilität, sondern eher durch Taktilität aus. Dabei spielt vor allem Textil eine besondere Rolle. Dessen Materialität wird immer wieder verschoben. Stoff erscheint als Baumaterial und Farbgebung, nicht nur zwangsläufig im Sinne von Kleidung, auch wenn Nähte und Verschlüsse als zeichnerisches Element und Ornament eine wichtige Rolle spielen.

With „Sheer Tapestry“, Gesa Kolb is developing a textile installation as part of her KABUFF residency in June 2024. She will engage with the work and exhibition space, furnishing and reinterpreting it in view of its provisional nature.

In the process, the materiality of the space will be examined and embodied. The Sheer Tapestry will ornamentally overlay and reflect the structure of the wooden walls. The artist’s aim is to play with the interplay of veiling and revealing in order to draw attention to the space. A kind of abstract tapestry that does not conceal the walls, but rather highlights them and allows them to become part of the artwork.

Gesa Kolb studied fine arts at the Karlsruhe Art Academy and was a master student of Prof. Erwin Gross. Her artistic work is often an interplay of body and space, but is also developed from the observation of understanding spaces themselves as bodies that are clothed. Some of the works are located on the walls, others cover the floors, others divide the spaces anew or conceal them. They are sometimes reminiscent of architectural elements such as roofs or stairs, but are characterized not by stability but rather by tactility. Textiles play a special role here. Its materiality is shifted again and again.  Fabric appears as a building material and color scheme, not only necessarily in the sense of clothing, even if seams and fasteners play an important role as a graphic element and ornament.
