Vortrag: Time and Visibility, Sound and Image: Reinventorying the Spaces of Transition

Performative Lesung, “Ghosttrap” mit Nadia Lichtig, Künstlerin aus Montpellier im Rahmen der Ausstellung “Nachtstücke”:

In De la différence des arts (L’Harmattan, Ircam/Centre Georges Pompidou, 1997), Jean Lauxerois and Peter Szendy pose a number of intriguing questions regarding the nature of art: why do we speak of arts in the plural, and not just art in the singular ? Is there an essence of art that transcends all the different genres and if not, where do we situate the limits that configure and separate the individual arts from each other ? These are just some of the issues raised by “Nachtstücke” that I will discuss in this talk: as I will show, the works in the exhibition explore the convergences and divergences between sound and visuals, playing with such notions as the Gesamtkunstwerk, synesthetic perception or the non-interdependence of the arts. Jaki Irvine’s If the Ground Should Open…, 2016, offers a total audio-visual experience in which sound and image merge, while Nadia Lichtig’s Ghosttrap, 2007/ 2018, translates spoken words into photographs and texts, challenging the Aristotelian unities of time and place by presenting these media in different spaces or at different times. My talk will explore these and other examples of works that seek to efface or reinforce the boundaries between the arts, thereby delving ever deeper into the question as to whether there are many arts or only one.

Warum sprechen wir von pluralen Künsten und nicht nur von Kunst in der Einzahl? Gibt es eine Essenz der Kunst, die alle Genres übertrifft, und wenn nicht, wo legen wir die Grenzen fest, die die einzelnen Künste voneinander abgrenzen? Dies sind nur einige der weitreichenden Fragen, die Jean Lauxerois und Peter Szendy in De la différence des arts stellen.

Dieselben Themen werden von der Ausstellung Nachtstücke aufgeworfen: Mit Begriffen wie dem Gesamtkunstwerk, der synästhetischen Wahrnehmung oder der Interdependenz der Künste geht es um die Schichtung von Kunstformen und die Grenzen zwischen ihnen in einzelnen Werken.

Jaki Irvines If the Ground Should Open…, 2016, bietet eine audiovisuelle Erfahrung, in der Ton und Bild verschmelzen, während Nadia Lichtigs Ghosttrap 2007/2018 gesprochene Worte in Fotografien und Texte übersetzt und die aristotelischen Einheiten von Zeit und Ort herausfordert.

Die Ausstellung Nachtstücke stellt Arbeiten der Gegenwartskunst ins Zentrum, die dunkle und unterdrückte Ereignisse erkunden, die schliesslich ans Licht gekommen sind. Es geht um die künstlerische Auseinandersetzung mit kollektiver Erinnerung an Kolonialismus und militanten Nationalismus und mit traumatischen persönlichen Erfahrungen. Durch ein vielfältiges Wechselspiel zwischen Bild, Ton und Text kommt es zur Überlagerung von Geschichtsschichten, in denen sich Wissen, Emotion und Nachdenken verbinden.

Nachtstücke is the title of E.T. A. Hoffmann’s famous cycle of narration from the years 1816/17 with stories about ominous and repressed sides of life. In art history, the term refers to pictorial representations of nocturnal scenes. Nocturnes as night-inspired compositions are cultivated in the 19th century. The exhibition Nachtstücke places works of contemporary art at the center that explore dark and repressed events that have finally come to light. It is about the artistic confrontation with collective memories of colonialism and militant nationalism and with traumatic personal experiences. Through a varied interplay between image, sound and text, layers of history overlap, combining knowledge, emotion and reflection.
