Zwischen den Fronten des Krieges und der Weite des Meeres öffnet sich ein gewaltiger Raum. Er ist durchflutet von Tod und Verlust, Heimat und Heimweh sowie von Geschichten der Flucht, der Ankunft und dem Ringen nach Zugehörigkeit und Identität. Der experimentelle Dokumentarfilm between war and sea basiert auf vier persönlichen Erfahrungen von Menschen, die aus Syrien geflüchtet oder dort geblieben sind. Aus diesen Stimmen entsteht ein vielschichtiges Bild, das weit über individuelle Schicksale hinausweist.

In fragmentarischen wie kontrastierenden Szenen spiegeln sich die Nachwirkungen des Krieges auf Leben und Erinnerungen, durchdrungen von Ängsten, Sehnsucht und Hoffnungen. Die Arbeit nähert sich dabei schwer fassbaren Erfahrungen, deren Wirkung auf unterschiedliche Weise spürbar bleibt. An der Grenze von Realität und Erinnerung, von privatem Erleben und kollektiver Geschichte, schafft between war and sea einen Raum für Reflexion über das, was bleibt, wenn Heimat verloren geht und ein neues Leben beginnt.

Anas Kahal (*1985 in Damaskus, Syrien) ist Künstler und lebt in Freiburg. Er absolvierte den Bachelor of Fine Arts in Damaskus und setzte sein Studium an der Staatlichen Akademie der Bildenden Künste Karlsruhe fort. 2025 wurde er mit dem Kalinowski-Preis ausgezeichnet, 2026 wird er das Aufenthaltsstipendium der Deutschen Akademie in der Casa Baldi, Italien erhalten.

Anas Kahals Arbeit between war and sea ist als neu konzipierte Videoinstallation in der Ausstellung FEAR – LESS – HOPE: Framing Time im DELPHI_space vom 10.10. bis 9.11.2025 zu sehen.

Between the fronts of war and the vastness of the sea, an enormous space opens up. It is filled with death and loss, with home and homesickness, and with stories of escape, arrival, and the struggle for belonging and identity. The experimental documentary between war and sea is based on four personal experiences of people who fled Syria or remained there. From these voices, a layered picture emerges, that points far beyond individual destinies.

In fragmentary and contrasting scenes, the aftermath of war is reflected in lives and memories, shaped by fear, longing, and hope. The work approaches elusive experiences whose impact continues to be felt in various ways. At the boundary between reality and memory, between personal experience and collective history, between war and sea creates a space for reflection on what remains when home is lost and a new life begins.

Anas Kahal (*1985 in Damascus, Syria) is an artist living in Freiburg. He completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Damascus and continued his studies at the State Academy of Fine Arts Karlsruhe. In 2025, he was awarded the Kalinowski Prize, and in 2026, he will receive the residency scholarship of the German Academy at Casa Baldi in Italy.
